An aunt and uncle who had half a dozen dogs over the decades would adopt a new one the day after one died - they just couldn't stand to be without a dog. Others say it's better to give yourself - or your family - time to handle the grief first. What do you think?

I think that it depends on the person. I had a Rat Terrier/Beagle Mix name Bosstown Or (Boston). He was the Greatest, and I mean the Greatest, Dog ever. I had to put him down due to some health problems that were out of my control. As soon as he past I was on the search. Not because I didn't care nor wanted to morn my beloved Bosstown. No I just needed that companionship given by a dog and if there is one thing that helps a broken or sad heart, it being able to adopted another animal. Now I have a beautiful full breed Beagle named Fang that I love to death. And yes I still miss my Bosstown.

It is so tough. I had a little beagle puppy that was my pride and joy. She died a painful death of a heart attack at 4 months and our other dog, a rat terrier was even more upset than us. We got another dog so he would perk up a bit. Once the new pup came home he was just as lively as ever

We are in the midst of this same situation right now. After surgery for intevertebral disc disease and complications 3 days later, we had to put our beloved 5 1/2 year old mini dachshund to sleep. We are empty nesters, and the lonely house is almost too much to bear especially coming home from work. This happened just one week ago and our hearts still ache for our little guy, but we'll probably get another dog fairly soon not because we want to replace him but because we loved him so much. That might sound funny to some, but I think doglovers will know what I mean.
