Feedtherescued - I'm writing to tell you about a rural Missouri no-kill, non-profit, animal rescue which desperately needs our help. I have no affiliation with this group, just first-hand experience with what it is trying to accomplish and the huge challenges it is facing. I'm also the forever mom of Ebba, one of the puppy-mill survivors saved by this group.

The rescue is S.T.A.F.F. - which stands for Society for Treatment of Abandoned and Fractured Friends.

STAFF is located in Sunrise Beach, MO - near Lake of the Ozarks. It ts truly amazing how much the people of this small community have given, and keep giving, to enable the success of STAFF. But hard economic times are now taking an extraordinary toll on all people in this part of MO, while the number of animals coming into STAFF is steadily increasing.

Commercial breeders in this area of MO are surrendering their dogs, in greater numbers than ever before. People lose their job, then they lose their home, and many are moving out and leaving Fido and Morris behind. Trigger, Billie and Betsy are also at risk, and STAFF provides care for these animals as well; requiring it to rent nearby farmland and out-buildings.

Could you spare $1, a bag of pet food, or the cost of a bale of hay or a bag of oats? Please help....

Thank you, in advance, for whatever help you give.

Common Cat Behavior Problems

jacobmaximilian1 - Cats are also prone to certain behavior problems, and some of the most common cat behavior problems include aggression towards humans or other pets, furniture scratching, issues with using the litter box and inappropriate play.

As with dogs, managing pet behavior problems that are commonly found in cats can be easily handled provided you start with a pet behavior modification strategy as soon as you recognize the issue. Cats are often a bit more stubborn with their training than dogs, but it is possible to be successful if you are patient and take the time necessary to provide proper training. Common managing strategies that are used to help with cat behavior problems include using squirt bottles to deter the cat from scratching or showing aggression, or using firm commands to stop them when they are doing something wrong.

Things to Consider When Adopting a Pet

jacobmaximilian1 - Adopting a pet is definitely a good idea, but there are many things to consider when adopting a pet from adoption shelters or rescue agencies. While there are many benefits of adoption, there are some downsides as well that need to be evaluated to determine if this is the right choice for you.

Probably one of the most important things to consider when adopting a pet from a rescue shelter or adoption agency, is the history of the pet. There are plenty of wonderful and loving pets in adoption shelters simply because their previous owners could no longer care for them, or wanted them. However, some of these pets are in shelters because of health problems, behavioral issues, or rescued from abusive situations.

I put together a collage of my favorite pictures and had one set made into cards i got from Shutterfly and sent them as thank you notes to my vet and the people closest to me. Another one i made into a framed picture. Its comforting to see her in her favorite places, doing the things that made her happiest. Makes her absence easier to deal with.
coraldude30 -
I wanted to know if anyone has any links or information on the benefits of uvb and leopard geckos? I've been reading around forums lately lots of discussion about it. I ask because I was thinking about using uvb lights for my pair of leos. I have zilla Desert Series tube lights for my uromastyx and my bearded dragon and on the box of the product it says they are ideal for leopard geckos. I mean I really like these lights, so I'd have no problem using them for my leos. But I was just wondering and wanted a little more information.
I actually read on a forum somewhere recently something about this. Unfortunately I don't remember where it was. I'll try to look though. I'm not completely sure myself as to benefits of uv and leos. But I obviously do know that they need calcium (which for other animals they can only process the calcium with the uv rays). But for what its worth, I have some Zilla Desert 50 fluorescent lights and I consider them to work as great as mvbs or any other uvb out there.

Either way, if you're looking for someone to take care of your sisters iguana, you should pay close attention and make sure they are knowledgeable w/iggys because they are pretty delicate creatures and you can't have someone who will put the iguana in danger.

One is deaf, and three are older than 10 years, but they are all healthy. I'd hate to see her put them in shelters, especially since the older ones have been such wonderful family pets for so long.
chuck05jackson - Goodbye my friend. When you showed up on the porch in -5 weather, I had no idea what a great cat you would turn out to be. I hope you found your way to our other friends who have gone on before.

Note to readers: Jerry died from a blood infection transmitted to him by some "unknown insect". The vets don't even know how it is transmitted but they do know the lethality of its effect. He was diagnosed with Hemo-plasmosis, a breaking down of the red blood cells in his body leading to anemia and eventual death. 72 hours is all it took. Take this to heart, if your cat has an "unexplained" infection or high fever, ask for bloodwork to be done ASAP! His symptoms were very similar to Feluk at the onset. Lethargy, fever, not eating. Had he been diagnosed more quickly it might have given us time to save his life.

He will be missed.

Love,

state fair - Veterans with disabilities are finding an ever-eager source of assistance: service dogs.
Several service dog organizations have started programs specifically for recent veterans, The New York Times reports. “These soldiers are a very young population; they do not want canes or crutches,” one source said. Many are ``fighting to get their independence back, and dogs give them a sense of independence.”
Service dogs are 24/7 companions that can retrieve and carry objects, open doors, call attention to safety hazards, help with stress and balance difficulties, and provide a bridge back to society. When a veteran with a disability goes out with a service dog, it can draw attention away from the injury.

state fair - With so many deer in KC's suburban neighborhoods and parks, lots of dung (deer scat) gets left behind. My dog loves it, I say with shame. So when I went looking for the reason why, I found this from veterinarian and syndicated columnist Michael Fox, who answers questions at washingtonpost.com:
``Eating such feces is not abnormal, and it may be part of a dog's natural wisdom - possibly a source of beneficial bacteria and B vitamins. So try your dog on a tablespoon of plain, organic, non-pasteurized yoghurt, and a teaspoon of Brewer's yeast in the food daily, plus digestive enzymes and probiotics from the vet may be called for...Deer poop, like horse manure, is canine caviar to some addicted dogs. So you may have to live with it - some dogs are so obsessed with eating other dogs' feces and their own that muzzling while outside is one solution, but that could lead to near asphyxia for a blunt-nosed breed like bulldogs and pugs!''

dough boy - I am not a scientist so this is just my opinion.

Last time I checked wild "things" will poop in a garden so what is a little manure?

Plus it is not like you are loading up a garden with just manure...the manure is one part of the compost.

Also as far as throwing poop away...I found myself doing the same thing if one of the dogs had an accident overnight, or while we are away...however, it just makes the trash smell. It finally occurred to me that they go to the bathroom outside, so now I just pick it up and throw it outside.

Granted I have a Chihuahua and a Jack Russell so we are not talking about large amounts either.

Personally I see no problem sticking the poop in the compost pile.

Paw Prints The Magazine - When it comes to training it does take a long time and it is a continuous process. In that aspect dogs are a little like children in that you are always teaching them. People think that you hire a trainer and BOOM, the dog should be trained. It doesn't work that way. The owner must keep reinforcing good behavior. Make sure you do not reinforce BAD behavior. Cesar's show is condensed to fit it in it's time slot.

We always recommend to hire a trainer. If you need a refferal contact us through www.pawprintsthemagazine.com or you can click on dig up a copy and find a trainer in our magazine.
