20 cats found in Phoenix canal likely didn't drown

PHOENIX — Authorities say 20 cats found floating in a Phoenix canal were probably already dead before they were put in the water.

The Arizona Humane Society says two cats were examined by veterinarians and they found no evidence that the cats drowned.

The 15 adult cats and five kittens also had no external trauma such as cuts or broken bones, and no signs of having put up a fight such as trauma to their faces or paws.

The cats had no signs of identification — microchips or collars — and none had been spayed, neutered or declawed.

A Salt River Project employee found the cats Tuesday afternoon and called Phoenix police.

The Arizona Humane Society is retaining the remains for use in further investigations and toxicology tests.
