Cheyenne shelter euthanizing fewer cats, dogs

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne Animal Shelter says it has been euthanizing fewer animals now that it's keeping fewer animals at the site.

Between July 1 and Aug. 15, the shelter euthanized 297 animals, down 24 percent from the same period last year.

Shelter director Rick Collord says keeping fewer animals on-site can improve adoption rates. That's because having too many similar cats and dogs can overwhelm potential pet owners and they may walk away without a pet at all.

However, adoptions have started to slow at the Cheyenne shelter, a possible result of the bad economy.
