HILLSBORO, Mo. — An eastern Missouri dog handler faces criminal charges after seven of eight show dogs left in her care died after being left overnight in a hot van.
Mary Wild of Arnold was charged Monday in Jefferson County Circuit Court with seven counts of animal abuse.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on its Web site that Wild was free on $2,500 bond. Calls to a telephone listed in her name were unanswered Monday night.
Wild arrived home with the dogs from a show in Iowa around 1 a.m. on June 22. She told police she planned to put the dogs in kennels in her garage but, because of the heat, decided to leave them in portable kennels in a van. She said she set up fans, opened a door open, and left windows partly open.
Authorities say temperatures in the van may have reached 120 degrees.
