Exotic cats sent from NM to Arizona shelter

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — An animal shelter in Arizona has received 33 exotic-breed cats that were turned over to authorities in southern New Mexico earlier this month.

The head of the Animal Services Center in Dona (Dohn Yah) Ana County, Beth Vesco-Mock, says the Bengal and Savannah cats were transported to the Humane Society of the White Mountains in Lakeside, Arizona.

Such cats are known for their unusual markings.

She says she believes the cats were part of a breeding operation because most of the female cats were pregnant.

Dona Ana County animal control supervisor Curtis Childress says the cats were in good health, but the owner didn't have a permit to own so many.

An owner whose name has not been released relinguished the cats to county officials June 3.
