LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Officials at a southern New Mexico county animal shelter say they'll have to euthanize more than four dozen dogs this week to make room for 12 pit bulls from an unresolved dog fighting case.
Dona Ana County Animal Control Division supervisor Curtis Childress says the pit bulls must be moved by Friday or Saturday to the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley because a grant covering their expenses at another site is expiring.

The pit bulls were among a number of dogs confiscated in August 2007 in Chaparral from brothers Daron and Duryea Scott. Allegations of dog fighting and animal abuse against them are pending before the New Mexico Court of Appeals.
The Scotts didn't relinquish ownership, so the county must care for the animals until the case is resolved.
