12.7-ton dog food donation swamps Seattle shelters

SEATTLE — Dog food donations are standard fare for animal shelters, but when the Port of Seattle offered 12.7 tons it was more than any in the area could handle.

Port officials bought 1,600 bags of dog food weighing 40,000 pounds in June to test new baggage conveyor systems at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. In October it all went into a warehouse.

Because of snowstorms, it wasn't until early this year that port officials moved to dispose of it. Port commissioners approved the donation to the Seattle and King County animal shelters Tuesday.

Since neither shelter has enough storage, most of the dog food will go to food banks for the pets of those in need.

Most of the dog food has passed its "best-if-used-by" date, but some runs through March 31.
