Owner of slain dogs says they harmed no one

MCCUNE, Kan. — The owner of two dogs that were gunned down by the local mayor says he's trying to cope with the killings.

Duane Wahl tells The Joplin Globe that his German shepherd Powerplant and terrier mix Gizmo "never bit nobody or anything like that."

But McCune Mayor Don Call, who's charged in the dogs' deaths, claims they were a problem. The Feb. 1 shootings came after the mayor received a call about the dogs chasing neighborhood children.

Call is charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals and one misdemeanor count of criminal discharge of a firearm. He's free on a $3,000 bond.

Authorities had said Wahl only claimed one of the dead dogs as his. But Wahl says he didn't initially recognize the German shepherd from a photo authorities showed him of the dog's corpse.
