Pet name is maxed out

For the love of Mike, let’s give Max a rest. The year 2008 was the sixth in a row that the name topped a national list of favorites for our dogs and cats.

“We’re guessing it’s appealing because it’s easy and short, one syllable,” said Brian Iannessa with Veterinary Pet Insurance. “It’s distinguishable from common commands. And for some reason Max seems appropriate for both dogs and cats.” The company analyzes dog and cat names annually from a database of insured pets.

Max-mania is part of a bigger trend to tag our pets with names that we also give our human babies. Several of the top 10 pet names are on the Social Security Administration’s list of popular baby names, including Chloe and Sophie.

Forget about Fluffy, Spot, Rover or Fido. Their rankings, respectively: 338; 659; 2,534; 2,866.

Take a look at www.wackypetnames.com for the company’s list of one-of-a-kind names that pop up, including Buddha Pest and Sirius Lee Handsome.
