Two horses had to be put down this morning after they were injured in a crash along Interstate 435 in Platte County just north of the Missouri River.
The driver of the truck pulling the horse trailer was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Sgt. Dan Green with the Missouri Highway Patrol. The driver’s wife and two other horses were not injured.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. today along southbound I-435. The couple from Illinois was headed to Texas in a pickup pulling a horse trailer containing four horses.
As they rounded a curve just before the Missouri River bridge, they hit a patch of black ice and the driver lost control, Green said. The truck ran off the road into the median and overturned.
The driver was pinned for a short time inside the truck. Once rescuers were able to get him out, he was taken to a hospital.
Two of the horses had to be put down at the scene, Green said. The two other horses were loaded on another trailer and taken to another location.
Authorities had to close I-435 down in both directions while they worked to clear the crash. The highway has since reopened.
Both the truck and the trailer were totaled in the crash, Green said.
Green urged drivers to take care while out on the roadways during wintry weather, even if the roads look clear.
“When you have had moisture and it is below freezing, there is a good chance the roads are going to still be slick,” Green said. “You need to adjust your driving accordingly. There are so many people out here who think the roads are clear and they can do the speed limit or whatever. The next thing you know they are losing control.”
