Christmas adoption special at Independence Animal Shelter

Independence is running a holiday special on pets.

A “Christmas Adoption Special” for cats and dogs at the Independence Animal Shelter will include reductions of some costs of adopting animals housed there this month.

In a resolution approved Monday night, the city authorized cuts in fees for adopting cats and dogs, as well as forgoing of a microchip fee.

The special would include a $10 reduction for kittens and cats and a $15 reduction for puppies and dogs in the fees charged by area veterinarians to spay or neuter the animals. Also, the Independence Animal Shelter would waive $10 of the adoption fee for kittens and cats, and $20 of the adoption fee for puppies and dogs.

The shelter also would waive a $10 microchip fee. This would represent a total savings of $30 to $45 for those adopting animals.

The special will run from Dec. 13 through Dec. 20.

That will allow for all animals adopted during this time to be altered and in their new homes by Christmas Day.

In December 2007, the city shelter took in 315 animals. Of those, 152 were euthanized. The cost to house and euthanize the animals was about $5,400.

Those costs decline in proportion to the number of animals adopted by families.

The Independence Animal Shelter is at 875 Vista Drive. For more information call 816-325-7207 or go to http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MO105.html.
